The Entrepreneurship Gyan (TEG) had its twenty-seventh session on February 15, 2025, organized by IIT Bombay Alumni Association's Startup & Entrepreneurship Special Interest Group (SIG)🎓 Ms. Rekha Koita is an Indian management consultant-turned-philanthropist and social impact leader who co-founded the Koita Foundation, a strategic philanthropy organization that helps nonprofits scale and improve outcomes through the smart use of technology, data, and digital transformation. Rekha completed her Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1992, graduating with the Institute Silver Medal for academic excellence. She went on to earn her Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1994, one of the world’s top programs in engineering and technology. She began her professional career at Accenture, where, for over eight years, she was a management consultant focused on operations, business process re-engineering, ERP design and implementation, performance enhancement, and human resources across a range of industries. Drawing on her consulting experience, Rekha also spent many years conducting corporate training for leadership, structured problem-solving, and business communication skills for both large enterprises and development organizations. In the mid-2010s, Rekha transitioned fully into the social sector, driven by a conviction that nonprofits could multiply their impact if they embraced technology, data analytics, and scalable operational systems. She co-founded the Koita Foundation in 2016 with her husband, Rizwan Koita, channeling her expertise into strengthening nonprofit performance and expanding access to quality education, livelihoods, digital health, and community programs across India. Her work emphasizes not just funding but active engagement in building capacity, governance, and digital solutions that improve delivery and measurable results. Under Rekha's leadership, the Koita Foundation has partnered with academic institutions, national healthcare organizations, government bodies, and NGOs to design standards, tools, and platforms that help organizations improve efficiency and scale their services. With her generous contribution, Koita Centre for Digital Health (KCDH) was established at IIT Bombay and Ashoka University. Rekha’s contributions have been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Distinguished Service Award from IIT Bombay in 2019, and, alongside her co-founder, the Forbes India Leadership Award (FILA) for Grassroots Philanthropists, acknowledging their deep involvement in catalyzing social impact through innovation and technology. Some of the questions: 1) You had a successful corporate and consulting career. What personal moment or realization pushed you to transition into the social sector and eventually co-found the Koita Foundation? 2) You’ve often spoken about valuing time, knowledge, and systems over just funding. What shaped this philosophy of hands-on, strategic philanthropy? 3) When you were setting up the Koita Foundation, what were the biggest gaps you saw in how nonprofits operated, and where did you feel technology could make the biggest difference? 4) Many social initiatives remain small or fragmented. How did you think about scale right from the beginning while designing the foundation’s approach? 5) When we talk about “technology in social impact”, it often gets reduced to digitization. In your experience, what does meaningful tech-enabled transformation actually look like? 6) How has data helped nonprofits and institutions you work with move from intuition-led decisions to evidence-based impact? 7) What are some real-world challenges nonprofits face when adopting technology, capacity, mindset, cost, and how does Koita Foundation help overcome them? 8) You work closely with nonprofits, governments, academic institutions, and tech partners. What makes cross-sector collaboration succeed or fail? So, whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur, a seasoned business owner, an academic, or simply someone with a keen interest in the world of startups and innovation, The Entrepreneurship Gyan (TEG) is an event you won't want to miss.
