A beacon of hope to those in need, the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception stands as a pillar in the Norfolk community. St. Mary's is the only African American basilica in the United States and is a Virginia Historic Landmark located in the heart of downtown. St. Mary's opened its doors in 1858 and served as a safe haven for all, especially those facing racial inequalities. During the restoration process, an underground tunnel was discovered beneath the Basilica, indicating the possibility of an escape route linked to the Underground Railroad. On this final day of Black History Month, we highlight St. Mary's history, resilience in the face of adversity, and community impact in Norfolk, Virginia.
