The Scottish Marine Wildlife Code states as follows: DO Keep your distance, avoid getting too close, especially if calves are present. Maintain steady direction and slow "no wake" speed. Keep the interaction short - no longer than 15 minutes. If the cetaceans approach your craft, maintain slow speed and steady course. Observe any local restrictions in sensitive areas. DO NOT Make sudden changes to speed and direction. Approach from directly in front or behind the animals. Drive between or scatter groups. Chase or repeatedly approach animals. Box animals in - if other vessels are present, stay clear. Swim with or try to touch cetaceans. The minimum separation distance is 200m (which is two football pitches) for pods with calves present. All of our Northern Isle pods have calves with them and the behaviour seen in this video and in person from the same particular vessel on many occasions is completely unacceptable. Incidents like this may undermine public willingness to report sightings due to worries that it could jeopardise the welfare of the animals. We did not go out of our way to film the vessel(s) in this video, but as you can see, it is hard not to include them when they are so close to the orca. We still had an incredible couple of days following the 65s & 27s orca (killer whale) pods around Orkney but feel it is also important to share when guidelines are being broken.
