This recording is from Friday 6th March. Derwent would go on to perform this 2 days later and place 3rd in the midlands regional championships, earning them a qualification spot to the Brass Band championships of Great Britain’s in the Royal Albert Hall, 2026, for the first time in the bands history. Comments from Chris Thomas of 4bars rest from their contest performance: A finely balanced and shaped opening from Derwent that finds admirable style in the music and is delivered with a degree of dynamic restraint that adds an additional layer of musical sophistication. Solo cornet executes the solo with relative security and style and the fast variation that follows displays wit, lightness of touch and waves of dynamic drama. What a beautifully intoned flugel solo and there is an expressive warmth and humanity to this that is so expressively engaging. It also exhibits a clear understanding of Elgar’s music, something that has been noticeably lacking from some performances today. Character and interpretative insight are vital to this test piece. Solo euphonium excels. There are just just a couple of moments of strain at the very top of the solo but this has pathos, space and time. At figure P the music is allowed to flow as the solo voices dovetail with gentle simplicity. There is so much ebb and flow and rubato to this…it’s beautifully done and emotionally affecting in its resonance. The transitions between the variations are deftly handled and as a result, the performance has a cohesion and stylistic shape that is deeply impressive. A gloriously rich build to the end puts the seal on a performance that brimmed with character and pomp. Christopher Thomas, 4barsrest
