My thoughts on the 1991 Mazda Rx7 with the 1.3L Rotary Engine and 5 speed manual gearbox: I love Rotary engines. If you know me, you know how obsessed I am with Rx7s and anything with a rotary engine. But this time around, my expectations weren’t quite met. I have a lot of experience with the second generation Rx7. I used to own one, I’ve reviewed three of them before, and have driven a six of them. I had never driven a convertible, and have yet to review an S5. So here goes: 1991 marks the last year of the FC rx7. That makes it a “Series 5” or “S5”. The series 5 offered a 1k rpm redline raise to 8k. The engine made almost 15 more horsepower than the series 4, along with other tweaks for more performance. S5’s are better for building, and racing. But then you add the convertible body style, and the performance enhancements get thrown out the window. Convertibles weigh a lot more than a coupe. Due to the needed chassis strengthening to compensate for a lack of roof, the convertible FC weighs in around 3,300 pounds. That’s a lot to ask from a 155hp engine. Because of that, the S5 convertible feels like a regular S4 rx7. The power was underwhelming. So if it doesn’t have the performance, what does it have? This car is a cruiser. Plain and simple. Leather seats, speakers in the head rests, easy on/off top, that’s what makes it a good cruising car. After I got over the lack of power, I realized how fun this car was to drive slow. With the hum of a rotary engine in front of me and the open air around me, I was at peace. So if you want performance, go with a coupe. But if you’re into going a little slower, and enjoying the view, the FC vert is the vert for you.
