Self-Cleaning Aquariums Made Easy: Plants, Microorganisms, Substrate, Lighting, And Feeding! Creating a self-cleaning aquarium might sound like a dream, but it’s absolutely achievable with the right approach—and in this video, I’ll show you how I’ve done it across multiple tanks in my fish room. If you’re into planted aquariums, low-maintenance setups, or just want to spend more time enjoying your fish tank and less time cleaning it, this one’s for you. A true self-cleaning system doesn’t mean zero maintenance, but it can mean going weeks—or even months—without water changes, just topping up for evaporation and trimming plants. I share what works for me after years of experimenting with different aquarium styles, substrates, plants, and livestock. You’ll learn how to build a low-maintenance ecosystem using dirted substrates (like the Walstad Method), or aquasoil options like Fluval Stratum. I explain why I never gravel vacuum my tanks, and how a layer of detritus can actually benefit your planted system by feeding waste-eating bacteria and generating natural CO₂. I cover how planted tank elements like fast-growing submerged and floating plants (like duckweed and water lettuce) purify the water by absorbing ammonium, nitrate, and excess nutrients. I also touch on the role of houseplants like pothos, peace lilies, and monstera when grown with their roots in the water. To support this biological balance, I talk about cultivating the right microorganisms and beneficial bacteria—including ammonia-oxidizers, nitrate reducers, and denitrifiers—that keep your fish tank clean with minimal effort. Adding microfauna, shrimp, and snails only strengthens the system further. Whether you're new to fish keeping or looking to reduce water changes, this video is packed with practical advice for setting up a stable, thriving planted tank. You’ll also hear why filters, lighting, and even heating still matter, even in a self-sustaining setup. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to build a balanced, low-effort ecosystem that runs smoothly on its own, tune in and see what a real self-cleaning aquarium looks like in practice. Thanks for watching—and good luck with your own journey in the world of fish keeping. #aquarium #fishtank #plantedtank TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Intro 00:26 - What Is A Self-Cleaning Aquarium 00:50 - Key Components Of A Self-Cleaning Aquarium 01:48 - Substrate 05:26 - Hardscape 08:16 - Submerged Plants 12:28 - Floating Plants 15:24 - House Plants 18:14 - Lighting 22:24 - Heating 25:06 - Microorganisms 31:17 - Microfauna 33:37 - Macrofauna 35:52 - Fish 38:13 - Feeding 40:28 - Filtration 41:59 - Maintenance
