Tillage radish is probably one of the best cover crops to improve impacted soil. It has deep taproots that expand as they grow, breaking apart heavy clay soil and adding organic matter into the earth. Once they either die back in winter, or you cut them back like I did and tarp them for a couple weeks, the tap roots will start to decompose and will add tons of organic matter into the soil helping to improve that soil. I am very happy with how these turned out, all though I never got the amount of depth from these as I had hoped, but next year I should get larger roots once this bed continues to improve. For the first planting of any crop, I think these did fairly well. While these are not as quick as the buckwheat/sunhemp cover crop mix I did earlier in the year on my other bed, they didn't take too long, and I would say right at the 90-100 day mark is about how long I let these go from planting. I think my next crop here is going to be a mix of carrot and cabbage. But im a bit undecided currently.
