Leaders leaving the briefing room STORYLINE Chinese president, Hu Jintao and his Italian counterpart, Giorgio Napolitano held talks at the presidential palace in Rome on Monday on the world economic crisis and the upcoming G8 summit in Italy. At a joint news conference after the meeting the Chinese president said the "economic crisis continues to spread and get worse." Hu is in Italy for this week's meeting between leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) nations and those of emerging economies in L'Aquila. Italy has championed the idea of expanding the G8 to include economic powerhouse nations such as China. During the news conference, the Chinese president did not address the deadly ethnic violence which has bloodied China's volatile western Xinjiang region. Chinese officials say violent street battles killed at least 140 people and injured 828 others after tensions between ethnic Muslim Uighur people and China's Han majority erupted into riots. Napolitano, whose role is largely ceremonial, did not mention the violence, but said the two agreed that China's recent development "poses new human rights requirements." Hu and Premier Silvio Berlusconi are to hold a news conference later Monday.
