Seems crazy BUT it works! Some flowers/plants produce a sap that cause a lot of issues for other plants in floral arrangements- Euphorbia is one of them. When you cut the stem you'll see a white milky sap dripping from it. And this is why you need to cauterize it, to block the stem from dripping all of that sap into the water. Just remember if you cut it fresh for your arrangement, burn the stem again! And, be sure to use gloves. The sap is very strong and can burn your skin too. Kind of crazy such a lovely garden staple could have such strong sap - it's worth the work to use it though.
