Speaker: Matthew Crighton, Friends of the Earth Scotland (FOES); secretary of the Just Transition Partnership. Talk Summary: We explore how economic activity can be made to fit within its environmental limits - starting by looking at the efforts to stop further climate breakdown, which will be essential if we want a wellbeing economy. This has shown us, even if we know how to address major environmental challenges, how hard it is in practice. The critique offered by the Just Transition Partnership of trade unions and environmentalists reveals that mainstream economic approaches are failing in Scotland - as they are globally. Should we draw the same conclusions about other environmental limits like the destruction of ecosystems, species extinction and plastic pollution in our seas? We can, for example, see similar shortcomings in the application of circular economy policies. Looking specifically at the need to reduce the overall amount of resources which we consume, we have to conclude that continued GDP growth is simply not compatible with planetary limits. Does this mean that our economic system has to change? Speaker bio: Matthew has co-ordinated the FOE Edinburgh local group and helped set up the Edinburgh Climate Coalition. He is the Secretary of the Just Transition Partnership, which he set up with the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) in 2016, with membership including FOES, Unite Scotland, UNISON Scotland and others. He first became involved in climate activism as International Officer of his UNISON branch. He has previously worked in local economic development and as an associate of the Learning and Work Institute. About Us: This webinar is part of the webinar series 'Energising the Wellbeing Economy Agenda in Scotland', organised by an informal group called the Scottish Wellbeing Economy Strategy Group. We have members from the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Scotland, Friends of the Earth Scotland, the Scottish Trades Union Congress, the People’s Health Movement Scotland, and academics at the University of Glasgow. The aim of the webinar series is to generate energy and discussion around the concept of a Wellbeing Economy and what this means for Scotland.
