Melbourne’s 2022 Rising festival featured a unique performance. It combined Melbourne’s legendary obsession with footy and a whole lot of rope #ArtWorksABC Subscribe now: https://ab.co/ABCArtsSubscribe Still Lives was conceived by artists Luke George (Melbourne) and Daniel Kok (Singapore). Their aim was to create a living sculpture of an iconic moment. They chose Andrew Krakouer’s towering 2011 AFL Mark of the Year. The performers were footy players from communities previously underrepresented or excluded from the sport. Interviews with the players reflecting on their relationship with footy formed part of the work which examined issues such as sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia in sport. The process took 2.5 hours and involved 500 metres of rope. The artists learnt about rope techniques through a bondage class, then spent years developing their abilities. Still Lives was part of a series of works which explore a city’s unique cultural symbols. In Venice, it was all about the gondola. In Melbourne, it was about how everyone is connected to footy in some way. Performers included Wotjobalak man and Yarra Glen Football Club’s Jim Marks, Co-founder of AFL Players for Climate Action and former Port Adelaide/North Melbourne player Jasper Pittard, LGBTIQ and mental health advocate from Yarra Glen Football Club Jason Ball, Musician, DJ, broadcaster and West Brunswick player Simona Castricum, and co-captain of West Brunswick Amateur Football Club Annie Mack. --------------- Hosted by Namila Benson, Art Works is the ABC's weekly half-hour arts show sharing the most inspiring, surprising, and formative ways that Australian creatives are telling our stories today. https://iview.abc.net.au/show/art-works Create an ABC Account to stream more on ABC iview: abc.net.au/signup ----------- Follow ABC Arts: / abc_arts Like ABC Arts: / abcarts Follow ABC Arts: / abcarts Follow ABC iview: / abciview
