Without a doubt Lewis Lodge is one of the most exciting day hikes on the Mesa. The ruin is on the Manti - La Sal National Forest. There are a couple of things that you should know in preparation for this trip. A high clearance vehicle and four wheel drive is a good idea. It is possible to walk the last mile or two of four by four from the rim if need be. The hike from the trailhead is only a mile and a half or so to the ruin. Even walking from the rim is doable in a day, however it is steep coming out. I would not suggest taking a dog on this one, or small children, a misstep in the wrong place will spell disaster. When moving around the Kiva you will find it to be exposed, a long way down. Do not climb over the Kiva it is way too fragile. Use care and look well to each step when passing this spot. The ruins should not be used as handholds. The first slick rock down climb could be protected with a line anchored at the top. I found it very straightforward and easy to navigate. The last thing that might be considered is if you are afraid of heights this is probably not a good trip for you. I do not put any route descriptions in my Cedar Mesa videos.
