Dozens of children — some as young as seven — spilled out of the open garage door of the Capital Punishment Boxing Club along Vernon Street, shuffling and throwing punches at the air. Just before the sun goes down, they walk through the troubled neighborhood back home, where their parents might or might not be around. It's those circumstances that lead some children in the neighborhood to get in trouble, said 13-year-old boxer Adrian Norris. But in that moment where they could get into trouble, boxing was a way to keep them focused, said trainer Jose Martinez. He and several other coaches started the gym about a year and a half ago so they would have a place to train their children. Back then, there were about five to six boxers. As time went on, more children would appear right before the coaches raised their shutter door, asking if they could learn what they’re doing.
