Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) is part of distribution utility control room platform, and it consists of multiple applications, namely Distribution Management System (DMS) enabling the distribution utility operator for maintaining reliable electric network operation, Outage Management system (OMS) supporting utility crew for restoring the electric service in the event of utility outages, and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) facilitating the integration of DERs into electric distribution grid operation where DERs can be either utility-owned or customer-owned. Traditional city infrastructure is often limited to the civil and mechanical engineering domain. In contrast, Smart City is defined as a modern urban development consisting of distributed energy resources (DER) and information & communication technology (ICT) in addition to traditional civil and mechanical infrastructure. Smart City's objective is to develop resilient, safe, sustainable, and healthy living fueling regional economic prosperity. The advent of DERs and ICT infrastructure in Smart City presents some challenges and many significant opportunities for novel business and technical innovation together with distribution utility control room operation powered by ADMS. This presentation will describe how Smart City functions, ranging from city planning to operational resilience and sustainable urban growth, which can leverage and assist the utility control room ADMS application.
