Psychedelic Research and Therapy 101: An Introductory Webinar (2019 - a bit older)

Do psilocybin, LSD and MDMA gain medical significance after all? The worldwide increase in mental illnesses such as depression and substance use disorders represents a serious crisis (WHO Mental Health Action Plan): 13% of the “global burden of disease” is attributable to mental health diagnoses. Effective psychotherapy is not available or only available to a limited extent for some disorders and the development of new psychiatric drugs with fewer side effects has almost been abandoned by the pharma-industry. In this situation, more than 30 universities worldwide are conducting research into psychedelics-assisted treatment of depression, addiction, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder – with astonishing interim results so far. In Germany, too, universities are setting out to research such therapies, which have now been approved for evaluation by the US Food and Drug Agency (FDA) as breakthrough therapies. Prejudices and the memory of accidents in the context of esoteric underground therapies still determine the attitude of doctors, psychotherapists and the press in this country. What contributes to rationalisation here and at the same time fulfils the ethical obligation to help patients? How could psychedelics-assisted therapy take a serious and effectively-oriented place in the health care system and even contribute to the renewal of psychiatry? Do the same risks to public health arise here as from the widespread, non-medically prescribed use of tranquilizers, stimulants and opiates – or how could this be prevented? The talks is a starter for those who have never heard about this emerging field of medicine or want to update their knowledge of what is happening in the so called psychedelic renaissance. We will touch some basic research, therapeutic application and public health issues. There will be time to discuss the interesting and critical topics around the history, current research and future implementation of psychedelic substances in medicine and society. This Webinar is for free. Go to https://mind-foundation.org/academy to follow Dr. med. Andrea Jungaberle is a clinical specialist in anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine in Berlin, Dr. sc.hum. Henrik Jungaberle is a drug and public health researcher. They both founded the MIND Foundation, which promotes research on psychedelic states of consciousness in medicine, neuroscience and society. Both speak against the background of decades of research experience and address medical and socio-cultural aspects of the topic. https://mind-foundation.org | https://insight-conference.eu
