In this video we start building our DIY solar ground mount using ground screws and a full wood post-and-beam structure. This isn’t a “how it must be done” guide — it’s just how we did it, what worked, what didn’t, and what we’d change next time. We walk through clearing and laying out the site, dialing in our azimuth, installing ground screws, setting posts, leveling horizontal braces, and building out a 35° sloped racking system using beams, joists, rails, wraps, and caps. Along the way there’s a surprise homeschool physics lesson, some math that actually worked out, and a few mistakes we definitely won’t repeat. You’ll also see how we mounted the solar panels (not the smartest way), experimented with Z-brackets, and learned some hard lessons about planning, grounding, and not rushing the fun parts. This build also includes framing for a future solar water heater experiment, which we’ll cover in another video. ⚠️ A few important disclaimers: – This structure isn’t finished yet and isn’t electrically connected in this video – We’re not electricians and didn’t touch final wiring here – If you’re not adding a center structure like we did, you’ll likely want additional diagonal bracing for strength If you’re thinking about building a solar ground mount, or you just like watching people figure things out the hard way, hopefully this gives you some ideas or inspiration. As always — we don’t know what we’re doing… but we’re gonna do it anyway. 👍 If you made it this far, thank you 🔔 Consider liking, subscribing, and following along for the rest of the off-grid solar build
