Oral melanoma is a type of cancer that develops in the cells that produce pigment in the oral cavity, including the lips, gums, tongue, and roof of the mouth. It is a rare form of cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all melanoma cases, but it is an aggressive form of cancer that can spread quickly to other parts of the body if not detected early and treated promptly. What are it's symptoms? Some of the common symptoms of oral melanoma include: 1) Dark or black spots in the mouth that may bleed or grow larger over time 2) A lump or thickening of the tissue in the mouth 3) Difficulty swallowing or talking 4) Pain or discomfort in the mouth 5) Loose teeth or a change in how the teeth fit together 6) Swelling in the jaw or neck Why is it caused? The exact cause of oral melanoma is not known, but risk factors may include a family history of melanoma, excessive sun exposure, and certain genetic mutations. Smoking and alcohol consumption may also increase the risk of developing oral melanoma. Is it genetically inherited? There is currently no definitive evidence to suggest that oral melanoma is inherited genetically. While some genetic mutations have been identified in certain cases of oral melanoma, the majority of cases appear to be sporadic and occur due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. What is it's treatment? Treatment for oral melanoma typically involves surgical removal of the tumor, followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy to help kill any remaining cancer cells. In some cases, immunotherapy may also be used to boost the immune system and fight the cancer. It is important to see a healthcare professional if any symptoms of oral melanoma are present. Early detection and treatment can greatly improve the chances of a positive outcome.
