excerpted from Jeff Tamarkin's 1998 CD notes: Jefferson Airplane were riding a wave of mega-stardom when they first came to Fillmore East. Although they'd been together since 1965, the Airplane only became a national phenomenon in the spring and summer of '67, with the success of two singles - "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" - drawn from their 2nd LP, Surrealistic Pillow, itself a huge hit. They'd become poster children for the hippie movement, sought out by the national media. That it's an Emigrant Savings Bank, no less, makes the current phase of this building's history even more bizarro. It was, after all, a European emigrant, Bill Graham, who was proprietor of the Fillmore East. Graham often found himself standing in front of the once-stately, now antiseptic, building defending his "capitalistic" practice of charging as much as he did for the concerts presented: as high as $5.50 a ticket! What would the bankers say to that?! PERSONNEL: Grace Slick (composer, vocal); Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar); Marty Balin (percussion); Paul Kantner (rhythm guitar); Jack Casady (bass guitar); Spencer Dryden (drums); Paul Williams (producer); John Chester (engineer); Mike Hartry (mixer) Recorded May 4, 1968 and released April 28, 1998 on RCA CD #07863 67563-2, "JEFFERSON AIRPLANE Live at the Fillmore East"
