By Lourdes Fangki. A Kankana-ey Song meaning "The Love We Have Suffered." The song was written by a Mr. Oakes from Bontoc Central but it was first sung and popularized by Pedro Chinalpan. The song is an adaptation from "There's Love At Home" which was written by John Naughton in 1860 and sung by the Mormon Choir in the 1920s. Nan Layad Nan Likhatan is considered the greatest song of the Cordillera Region of Northern Philippines. Story has it that Mr.Oakes was in love with a fair Bontoc maiden. However, the relationship did not prosper because the woman married a Mr. Claver. With a somber mood that this song exudes, it is surprising that the song is sung in weddings. This song is unofficially the national anthem of the Cordillera Region. There is more than a dozen versions of this song on YouTube. However, my video is unique because I included lyrics in 3 different languages. The Kankana-ey Lyrics were obtained thru Google search and the English Lyrics are partly my own and blended into the lyrics written by Foingakhan of bontocikholot.blogspot.com and from the English Lyrics from Justice Clayton's video.
