This is the forgotten story of Kennett, California—an old mining town that once thrived with copper, gold, railroads, and saloons, but now lies buried beneath Lake Shasta. In the late 1880s, George Graves discovered copper near Backbone Creek, sparking a boom that led to the formation of the Mammoth Copper Mining Company and major operations at the Mammoth and Golinsky Mines. With the railroad, the Mammoth smelter, and famous places like the Diamond Saloon, Kennett quickly grew into a bustling town along the Sacramento River. But when mining declined and Shasta Dam was built in 1935, Kennett—along with Copper City, Elmore, and Pitt—was submerged forever. Today, it’s one of California’s lost underwater ghost towns.
