However, few people are familiar with how these prints were made. Hokusai’s The Great Wave may resemble a painting, but is in fact a multicolor woodblock print. Ukiyo-e artists like Hokusai made sketches and handed them to a skilled carver to create the blocks used to print them. When the blocks were ready, they were taken to a printer, who used them to create multiple woodblock prints. This video introduces the printing process of Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). The accomplished craftsmanship of ukiyo-e woodblock prints continues to this day in Japan.
