Haugesund Coastal Walk - P&O Iona Norway Cruise - April 2024

We stopped at the port town of Haugesund as part of our cruise to Norway on the P&O Iona ship in April 2024. If you've seen our other videos, you know one of the things we enjoy is taking a nice long walk near the cruise port, and this trip was no exception. Checking online we saw that there appeared to be a nice gentle walk along the coast where there were were some interesting statues next to the sea called Kvalsvik Skulpturpark (The Rising Tide) These four haunting sculptures set in the water fuse horses with oil extraction machinery that are intended to draw attention to our reliance on oil and machinery. The sculptures were crafted by Jason Decaires Taylor and were previously on display in London on the River Thames apparently. The walk took us through the town of Haugesund and then it was an easy walk along the coastal path itself. On the day we were there, it was slightly cloudy and grey, but I imagine the walk would be even better in the Sun. There were various little coves and rock formations, and lots of sheep in one area, as well as a good number of sea birds. When we approached Kvalsvik, a hidden cove nestled two kilometers north of downtown Haugesund, there were a lot of people at the Rising Tides statues so we didn't stop and continued our walk along the coast. This led us to a rather interesting old German gun battery. (Kvala battery). Again, we continued walking and decided to stop there on the way back. At the end of the walk, we walked very slightly inland and found a small "play area" and after some initial confusion, we realised that there was a tight-rope installed for people to use. We really weren't dressed for that type of activity, and it certainly isn't easy in big hiking boots, but that didn't stop us giving it a go and having a laugh at our own attempts to join the circus :) From there, we turned back and stopped first at the Kvala battery, and then further back at the Rising Tide Statues. It was great to have a sit down, and enjoy the relaxing sound of the water against the rocks. As we walked back the wind had picked up a little, so the air was cooler, but that was contrasted with the fact that the Sun had come out slightly, so all in all it was a lovely walk. When we got back to the town, we found a lovely little coffee shop (Totalen Bluebird coffee shop) and grabbed ourselves a really nice Mokka for myself and a Hot Chocolate for Amanda. It was a good atmosphere in the coffee shop, it was reasonably priced and the drinks were lovely! After finishing our drinks, we took a further stroll around the shops and then headed back to the ship. We enjoyed our day in Haugesund and it was a very nice, easy walk, so if you are here on a port stop, we can recommend doing this if you just want something free and simple to do.
