Marks & Spencer has unveiled its 2025 Christmas advert, starring Dawn French and celebrity chef Tom Kerridge. The 90-second film opens on Christmas Eve, with 68-year-old Dawn caught in gridlocked traffic while cheerfully singing along to Chris Rea’s festive classic Driving Home for Christmas. The hiring of Dawn French has sparked controversy following her previous apology for a social media video about the October 7 attacks, which she admitted was delivered in a “mocking tone.” In the original 40-second clip, the Vicar of Dibley star said: “Complicated, no, but nuanced. But bottom line is no.” She then switched tone, adding: “Yeah, but you know they did a bad thing to us, yeah but no. But we want that land... and we have history... No. Those people aren’t really even people, are they really? No.” French later issued an apology, explaining that while she had been trying to communicate “an important message,” she had “clumsily used a mocking tone.” “My intention was NEVER to mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror of what happened on 7 October 2023,” she wrote on X and Instagram.
