This session explored how innovative digital tools can move math and science assessment from prototype to scalable practice. As education becomes increasingly digitized, students need more than traditional subject knowledge — they must develop skills such as modeling, problem-solving, reasoning, and applied thinking. However, these skills have often been difficult to measure accurately with traditional multiple-choice formats. To address this challenge, the team collaborated with GeoGebra to develop an open-source Portable Custom Interaction (PCI) for QTI, enabling interactive, simulation-based math and science tasks to be embedded directly into online assessments. The presentation showcased the GeoGebra PCI in action, sharing lessons learned from development through large-scale implementation. The speakers also examined how these immersive item types influence student engagement, assessment effectiveness, and the measurement of essential STEM problem-solving skills. Attendees left with insights into how open standards and collaboration can help transform innovative assessment design from small pilot projects into classroom-ready practice, advancing both engagement and measurement in STEM learning.
