He has a long history as a sideman and the Texan is also an accomplished composer. Present in 2022 on the stage of the Maison de la Culture in Clermont-Ferrand, on the occasion of the Jazz En Tête festival, the man himself delivers a particularly elegant set. Surrounded by Jon Boutellier on tenor saxophone, Danny Grissett on piano, Jason Brown on drums and the excellent Darryl Hall on double bass (the same musician who accompanied Sting at the beginning of his solo career), the trumpet player starts this set with "Mary Ann", a song by Ray Charles from the 50s, whose great musicality is highlighted by Jim Rotondi's version. This cover is a legitimate extension (Jim Rotondi accompanied the Genius in his time), and the ensemble then performs “Falset”, a track that sounds like a standard. Led with a restrained mid-tempo, this sequence naturally highlights the American blower's playing, but this time on the bugle. Finally, the very cinematic "Chouchou", taken from the Iron Man album, imposes its share of dense and vibrant images, with powerful solos and a breathless rhythm. A worthwhile rediscovery...
