Alfa Romeo Stelvio: Hope You Like Green

Let’s test drive and review the 2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce! The Stelvio entered the market as Alfa Romeo’s first SUV, and it actually hasn’t been around that long. The Stelvio debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2016, and it drove on stage after this spoken-word-poem-rap thing about how life is boring and how adding the Stelvio to your life would be so not-boring that you’d need a cold shower from it. It was a new car, and it was off to a wild start. The plan was to make the Stelvio a sporty crossover model, and that was immediately obvious due to its name and its connection to the Alfa Romeo Giulia sport sedan. “Stelvio” is the name of a famous mountain pass in Italy, and the Stelvio shared a platform with the Giulia. That platform is called the Giorgio, and Alfa used it to create low centers of gravity and 50/50 weight distributions on the Giulia and Stelvio.  There was also a 500-horsepower Stelvio Quadrifoglio on the American market, which shared a V6 engine with one of my favorite sports cars, the beautiful, wonderful, amazing Giulia Quadrifoglio. Some people might say that V6 engine is basically Ferrari’s F154 V8 engine with two cylinders cut off, but I’ll get yelled at if I say that. As much as I love the Giulia Quadtrifoglio, both it and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio left the American market in 2024. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce has a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-four-cylinder engine that makes 280 HP and 306 pound-feet of torque. That power goes through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, because this car is all-wheel drive (AWD).  The Alfa Romeo Stelvio, like the Giulia, has a presence. It looks right at home on American streets or touring the Italian countryside, and it’s elegant. It’s the most beautiful car in its class. In 2024 on the American market, the Stelvio came in a bunch of trims: the base Sprint, then the Ti, Veloce, Competizione, Quadrifoglio, Quad Carbon, and Quad Supersport. Now, with a new Stelvio nearing, there are only a few 2025 trims currently able to be speced: the base Stelvio, the Intensa, and the limited-edition Tributo Italiano.
