Iraq typically faces brutal heat in the summers and frequent electricity outages make life even harder when temperatures soar. To make matters even worse, there are electricity shortages which makes air conditioning scarce. "We can't stay indoors and endure such scorching heat so I came here with my children to have fun and cool off," says Baghdad resident Mouhamed Ibrahim. Iraqis have suffered from power shortages for decades as the infrastructure suffered from neglect brought on by wars and UN trade sanctions under Saddam Hussein. Billions of dollars have been spent trying to fix the grid since the 2003 US-led invasion, but many Iraqis, mainly Baghdad residents, receive an estimated 10-12 hours of power per day.
