Amnicon Falls State Park & Tri County Corridor 🦫 Wisconsin Scenic Trail Virtual Run

Today I'm hitting the Tri-County Corridor multiuse trail and Amnicon Falls State Park in South Range, Wisconsin. I'll follow about five miles of the Tri-County trail before entering the park to see all of the crazy spring waterfall action. The Tri-county Corridor is a 60 mile trail that stretches from Superior to Ashland Wisconsin. It's often used by ATVs, but is open to runners and bicyclists as well. The section I ran was all relatively well-graded gravel, but it is apparently asphalt-paved in parts too. Most people don’t think of faults and earthquakes when they think of Wisconsin, but that’s exactly why the Amnicon Falls area exists. The Douglas Fault stretches from Ashland, Wisconsin almost to the Twin Cities. About 500 million years ago, the fault shifted, forcing the basalt layer to the same level as sandstone. From then to now, erosion between the two layers created the falls that we can see today.
