("Ethicon"), a Johnson & Johnson Company recalled one of its surgical staple products due to the risk of patients suffering injuries from surgical site leaks following stomach reduction surgery. The recall included over 57,000 units of the Echelon 60 mm black reload staples which are used in place of sutures to close the stomach during reduction surgery. URGENT DEVICE RECALL Ethicon issued an urgent world-wide recall for its ECHELONTM 60 mm Black Reload staples. According to the company, this recall was "initiated due to the potential for incomplete staple line formation from reload damage during the firing sequence." According to the company, the defect could result in an anastomotic leak which would require surgical intervention. In other words, the recalled staples could cause an increased risk of a leak along the surgical incision line of the stomach, leading to severe and life-threatening medical complications.
