It all starts with the godfather of psychedelic research, Humphry Osmond. Osmond began studying the effects of entheogenic substances in psychiatric settings as early as the late 40’s. He even coined the term “psychedelic” - which combines the Greek words “psyche” and “delos” to mean “mind-manifesting”. Christopher Mayhew was a career politician, and a friend of Osmond’s. In 1955, he agreed to take mescaline in his home, with Osmond as his guide, and to allow the BBC to film his experience. Though Mayhew described the experience as “the most interesting thing I’ve ever done”, the BBC refused to air the segment. It was later shown in the 1986 BBC documentary “LSD - The Beyond Within”.
