Parkinson’s disease develops slowly. Patients may experience tremors, slowness, and balance issues over time. “It is somewhat treatable early on with medications, but later medications tend to inadequately treat symptoms and that's kind of where surgery comes into play.” Dr. George Mandybur offers a procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation that can help those who qualify. “The DBS is much like a heart pacemaker, and rather than the wire going into the heart, it goes into the head...The way it works is it helps remodulate the brain, so the circuit's going bad because of the disease, and the added electricity that we give off with the stimulator kind of counters some of the negative effects of that degenerative process.” This technology has been around for years, but now it’s newer, smaller, and safer than ever before. It can have a significant impact on someone’s quality of life. “In one study, it showed six hours during the waking day of improved ability to get out and do things. For somebody who has a 12-hour or an 18-hour day, that's half to one-third of the entire day, where you can do something where before you couldn't,” said Dr. Mandybur. DBS is completely customizable and individualized. “Many, many patients will leave the office after first programming nearly speechless on how good they're doing. Then they can return, say if symptoms catch up to them in months or years, they can come back to the clinic and have readjustment. Because this is an accessible device electronically, we can adjust it at any time, even via telehealth,” said Dr. Mandybur. You can learn more by searching for DBS on leehealth.org.
