March 1, 2026 What does the Bible say a local church assembly should look like? In this study from Philippians 1:1 (KJV), we explore how the apostle Paul addressed the church at Philippi and what it reveals about the structure, leadership, and purpose of a biblical assembly. Paul writes, “to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.” In this message, we examine what those roles mean and how a local church functions as “the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). This teaching also looks at the origin of the church at Philippi in Acts 16, including Lydia, the Philippian jailer, and the early believers who formed a local assembly devoted to the work of the ministry. Topics covered in this study include: What a saint is according to Scripture The purpose of a local church assembly The roles of bishops, elders, and deacons Why believers gather together for edification and ministry How the church is established through Paul’s gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery The goal of the church is to preach the gospel, edify the saints, and stand firmly in the truth of God’s word. As Paul writes later in the chapter: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21 (KJV) If you want to better understand biblical church structure and the role of believers in the Body of Christ, this study will walk through the key passages step by step.
