I scrapped that idea shortly after, because I felt like I didn't really have much to say with this composition back then. But I think I do now. Anyways. This La La Land movie made quite an impact on me because I can really relate to it. Authenticity, dreams, the hustle, and romantic love... All the good stuff... :) And now for my thought process for arranging this... NERDY SECTION So the beginning starts off sounding pretty much like the original. Nothing fancy here, just introducing the theme in the first 8 bars. In the next 8 (0:20 - 0:40), we start to hear a little bit of embellishment - an extra voice to fill in the gaps, and also triplets in the accompaniment, which I find works really well for this bittersweet melody. Moving on to the next 8 bars, I've actually written an original counter-melody here in the LH (0:40 - 0:55) which I think sounds pretty cool. See if you can pick it up. 1:02 is a short mini climax, but the big one comes later at 1:25. Instead of doing that hard flashy jazz stuff that's in the original (because I don't like it anyways), I've decided to do a build up into a huge climax that opens the theme all over again. What might be a little interesting here is that I've decided to use chord vi (F# Minor) for this opening chord instead of the original chord I (A Major), and I preceded it with an E Dominant 9th chord with the bass line moving up a semitone twice. This results in one huge-ass epic climax! So we are now doing the theme again, but in a more grandioso style. It doesn't stay that way for too long though, and soon relaxes into a more sweet and gentle sound in the higher register, which I think is a good contrast from the first time. More embellishments and romantic triplets here as well. The chord at 2:19 is supposed to be a surprise chord for the listener, because I'm about to do something radically different - a short variation on the theme, of which the idea came to me while improvising around. Also, I feel like this (2:19 - 2:35) is something Sebastian in the movie would do, him being cheeky and all. This new variation section opens at 2:35 and is in 12/8 time, instead of the original 3/4. It sounds a little more upbeat, and because I'm no longer using an A Major 7th chord (except for 1 bar and the opening of this section), but just a regular A Major triad, the introspective sound is no longer present. This section closes slightly abruptly, and I also skipped some parts intentionally. There is a reason for this - inauthenticity eventually takes its toll on you, so at 3:27, you could think of Sebastian beginning to think to himself, "Fuck this upbeat shit music, I'm ending it now." And he finally releases all his frustration on that V7/vi chord (C# Dominant 7th at 3:31) with a loud "FUCK YOU." He also stops screwing around with compound time at 3:35. "Enough is enough," he says. END OF NERDY SECTION Anyways. This one's for all you courageous people who have the crazy audacity to dream; who hustle hard and relentlessly; and who love wholeheartedly with everything you've got. Know that you're not alone.
