Digimon: The Movie effectively utilizes the expressive animation of the original Japanese films alongside witty comedy, dynamic sound design and an alt-rock soundtrack to give the film meaning outside its poorly-paced story. It simultaneously spotlights an overarching Western ignorance about foreign animation at the turn of the 21st century. ——— Wow, I can’t believe this is finally done! I started this project back in 2020, after the entire live events industry shut down and I was out of work. I never expected the direction this behemoth would take, because I really just wanted to talk about the Digimon movie. Consider this a review, retrospective, contextual analysis, or video essay, whatever you'd like really. At the end of the day, this is my love letter to the first movie I remember seeing. It would mean the world to me for you to watch it. Two people I want to shout out because I forgot to add you to the credits: Serena, for thinking I could totally make this, and Evan, not just for your amazing voice-over work, but for your continued friendship all these years. Thank you for believing in me. ——— 0:00 Intro 1:57 What is Digimon? 3:51 Part 1: Who can count backwards from 2000? 9:59 Saban Entertainment 15:10 Back to the Past 18:28 Part 2: Like A Based God Cursed 18:38 Digimon Adventure (1999) 23:29 Cold Open 25:07 Digimon: The Movie Part 1 26:39 Our War Game! 31:17 Digimon: The Movie Part 2 36:13 Part 3: What to Do with Part 3 36:24 Hurricane Touchdown 39:36 Digimon: The Movie Part 3 42:19 The Soundtrack 47:18 2000 and Beyond 50:09 Where Do You Go From Here? 53:44 Sigh 54:03 Part 4: Dead Weight 54:12 Low-Hanging Fruit 58:37 Dubs Over Subs 59:24 Net Fandom 1:00:29 Mind the Gap 1:01:15 The Weight of Digimon: The Movie Majority of footage is from DarkDream787's encode of the movie.
