We are depending on the trip computers' accuracy (actually their inaccuracy to be the same) and there may be a variation in this which will skew the figures a little but not much, VW Driver magazine tends to quote a variation of around 3%, often lower (so around 1.5 mpg max) Both cars were up to operating temperature when the test started. The test was performed over 5 miles, 56% of the journeys performed by car in the UK are 5 miles or less so we believe this is a representative distance and any further would be unrepresentative of how we drive in the UK. The official fuel consumption figures as stated at Parkers.co.uk are as follows: Leon ST TDI FR Sport DSG : 51.4 - 54.3 mpg https://www.parkers.co.uk/seat/leon/s... Golf 1.9 TDI 100 SE manual : 52 mpg https://www.parkers.co.uk/volkswagen/... It should be noted that the Leon was tested using the new WLTP process which should mean the stated figure is more accurate therefore it would be reasonable to expect it to be more economical in a real world test like this one but the Mk4 was tested pre-dieselgate defeat device so we expect it to be reasonably representative. According to Parkers the Golf Estate's unladen weight is significantly higher which I find surprising and may be because the Leon has been weighed dry with no fluids so hard to know for sure what's true but they are probably quite close: Leon 1310 kg Golf 1500 kg In this video I follow up my suspicions and see if the 217000 miles 2005 Mk4 Golf TDI Estate I bought for just £1 is better on fuel than my nearly new £25,000 Leon TDI With my car sales business finally reopening on 1st June, the work needed to get ready means I am finding it hard to reply to comments and Instagram direct messages right now.
