Valles Caldera National Preserve, NM: Exploring the Backcountry.

About 1.2 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as Valles (pronounced VAH-yes) Caldera. The 89,000-acre national preserve is home to vast mountain meadows, forested lava domes, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. Valles Caldera National Preserve is in north-central New Mexico along Highway 4 between Jemez Springs to the west and Los Alamos and White Rock to the east. Visitors with time to spare can drive into the backcountry along the 18-mile-long backcountry vehicle route. This route takes you from the Valle Grande front-country through the central part of the park and up into Valle Toledo and Valle San Antonio in the north.
