The temple is dedicated to **Lord Shiva* in the form of Arunachaleswarar (Annamalaiyar) and his consort **Parvati**, known as **Unnamulai Amman**. --- *Legend and Mythology of Arunachalam Temple* *The Story of Arunachala Hill and Lord Shiva’s Infinite Form* According to Hindu mythology, once *Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma* argued over who was superior. To resolve the dispute, *Lord Shiva* appeared as an infinite pillar of fire (Jyotirlinga) and challenged both of them to find its beginning and end. Vishnu took the form of a boar (**Varaha**) and dug deep into the earth, while Brahma took the form of a swan (**Hamsa**) and flew upwards. Vishnu, after searching endlessly, accepted his defeat. However, Brahma falsely claimed he had reached the top by taking the help of the Ketaki flower. Shiva, realizing Brahma’s deceit, cursed him, declaring that he would never have a temple dedicated to him. The *Arunachala Hill* is considered to be that **Jyotirlinga**, the pillar of fire that Shiva manifested. *Parvati’s Penance and Karthigai Deepam* Goddess *Parvati* once playfully closed Lord Shiva’s eyes, causing darkness to spread across the universe. As a penance, she came to **Tiruvannamalai**, performed austerities, and was reunited with Shiva. This event is celebrated as **Karthigai Deepam**, where a massive lamp is lit on the **Annamalai Hill**, symbolizing the eternal fire of Shiva. *Ramana Maharshi and Arunachala* **Sri Ramana Maharshi**, a great saint, considered Arunachala to be the physical manifestation of Lord Shiva.
