National Taiwan Normal University has undertaken a massive disinfection project, after reporting its first case of COVID-19 on Tuesday. The school has announced plans to move teaching from the classroom to the net, with all classes to take place online from Monday. It is the first Taiwanese university to roll out distance learning for all its classes. While the abruptness of the decision has taken students aback, many support the move. It’s the Tomb Sweeping Festival long weekend, but NTNU is a hive of activity. Professionals have been called in to disinfect the whole university.First the campus on Tingzhou Road, and then the main campus, including indoors and outdoors, are all being meticulously sprayed. NTNU has had its first student diagnosed with coronavirus. The source of the infection is still obscure, and NTNU is taking no chances.Prof. Frank YingNTNU vice presidentWe have been routinely disinfecting twice a day. This represents a more thorough deep-clean, so that everyone can feel that this is an even safer learning environment.Accusations that the school was covering up the infection had been circulating, claiming the student suffered a fever for a week before any steps were taken. NTNU has denied the story. It’s been authorized by the Ministry of Education to move all its classes online from April 6 to 17, as a precautionary measure.Prof. Frank YingNTNU vice presidentWe previously planned to implement distance learning from April 27 for all classes of more than 60 students. So we are just bringing that plan forwards to ensure that students can study without worries.NTNU studentThere are pros and cons to this. The upside is we can stay at home and reduce the risk of infection. The downside is that some classes are harder to replace with online classes – like sports.NTNU studentI think it’s necessary, because the infected student wasn’t just taking classes from his own department. He was taking classes from two majors, so I think the university’s got the right strategy. But it is a bit sudden.National Chiao Tung University has also announced its classes will go online on April 27. Then there’s National Yang-ming University and National Taipei University, which are just starting trials of online classes to get teachers and students used to the format. They hope that will mean teaching can continue without a hitch if or when they make the switch.
