In the village of Borgoumont, there is an imposing building on top of the hills in the Belgian Ardennes. This sanatorium is known as the Sanatorium du Basil and has a rich history. In the 19th century, numerous sanatoriums were built in Europe for the treatment of tuberculosis. This disease was known as a barely treatable disease that often ended fatally. The initiative for building this sanatorium came in 1899 from Ernest Malvoz, director of the Bacteriological Laboratory. A year later, construction started on the building. In 1903, the doors were opened, and the first patients were cared for. Clean air and rest often benefited tuberculosis patients, so the Sanatorium du Basil location was perfect. When patients could be treated better, the sanatorium became redundant. The building functioned as a hospital for several years, and received refugees between 2010 and 2013. Due to skyrocketing utility bills, the building subsequently closed its doors, and the building became the target of vandalism. The building has still not been demolished. The building is for sale, for an amount of 1.5 million euros. The site is a popular urbex destination in Belgium. It's pretty easy to access and is situated in the Liege region.
