"We are Not American..." Still: American Quarterly Special Issue Launch

American Quarterly Special Issue Launch "We are Not American..." Still Haunani-Kay Trask proclaimed, "We are not American," on January 17, 1993. Her words profoundly impacted and impacted the Kanaka 'Oiwi to refuse Americanness and challenge the legitimacy of U.S. claims to Hawai'i. Yet, little attention has been paid to Hawai'i's claim as a sovereign nation and the U.S.'s illegal occupation of the land. The American Quarterly special issue examines the issues of greater visibility to Hawai'i's refusal of Americanness, the work of building a lāhui founded on solidarity, reciprocity, and the shared understanding of what it means to stand against the U.S. The launch of this issue invites other lāhui to critically reflect on their histories and create space to share the possibilities of bringing together and making relationships through connections of past, present, and future visions unconstrained by @ UH Mānoa Sept. 13th, 2024
