Canadian Driver Tries to Hit FHP Trooper During Chase

Incident Report: On 03/01/2024 at approximately 4:02 A.M., I was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Interstate 75 southbound at mile marker 324. At which time, I was conducting stationary radar enforcement and observed a black Ford F-150 bearing Ontario License Plate (AJ81505) traveling at a high rate of speed southbound in the inside lane of travel. I estimated the vehicle to be traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour in a posted 70 miles per hour zone. At this time I activated my stalker dual radar and obtained a clear and concise audio Doppler sound with no radio frequency at 101 miles per hour in a posted 70 miles per hour zone. I exited the median of Interstate 75 and overtook the vehicle on Interstate 75 southbound at mile marker 321. I activated my lights and sirens in my fully marked all-black Florida Highway Patrol vehicle with reflective insignia identifying me as a Florida Highway Patrol State Trooper. The vehicle failed to obey my lights and sirens and continued southbound on Interstate 75 southbound traveling at a high rate of speed in reckless manner with a wanted disregard for the public safety, failing to maintain his lane of travel. I advised TBRCC (Tampa Bay Regional Communication Center) that was in pursuit of the vehicle. I attempted to slow the vehicle to a rolling stop on Interstate 75 southbound at mile marker 317 using a semi in the slow lane and my vehicle in the middle lane, but the vehicle then utilized the shoulder of Interstate 75 and continued southbound on Interstate 75 into Hernando County, Florida, and then further into Pasco County at which time Trooper Smith attempted to spike strip the vehicle on Interstate 75 southbound at mile marker 293 but was unsuccessful. The pursuit then continued in Pasco County. Trooper Roberts (ID#1479) joined the pursuit and took the lead at which time he attempted to pit the vehicle multiple times but was unsuccessful. The vehicle continued on Interstate 75 southbound and exited onto State Road 52 running a clearly visible red light and continued eastbound on State Road 52 and entered back onto Interstate 75 southbound at mile marker 285. Trooper Roberts then attempted another PIT at which time the driver/defendant who was later identified by his Ontario License as Tyler Cole Kewayosh avoided the contact and then attempted to make intentional contact with Trooper Roberts’ driver side of his vehicle to cause harm to him and damage his vehicle, resulting in Trooper Roberts having to use evasive actions to avoid the contact with the defendant's vehicle. The pursuit continued onto Interstate 75 southbound at approximately mile marker 278, at this time Sergeant Moore (ID#322) joined the pursuit and conducted a PIT maneuver on the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle then lost control of his vehicle and entered the west grassy shoulder of Interstate 75 southbound just south of the Pasco County Rest area and became immobilized by Troopers. The defendant then exited his vehicle and fled on foot into the woods at which time Trooper Smith (ID#890) observed the defendant exit the driver seat and flee into the woods. I then followed the defendant into the woods as Trooper Smith and Trooper Durham (ID#1877) went around the outer skirts of the woods. The defendant was then apprehended and taken into custody on 03/01/2024 at approximately 4:31 a.m. by Trooper Smith and Trooper Durham, who turned the defendant over to me. After speaking to the defendant, I did not notice any noticeable signs of impairment. Due to my not being able to observe any signs of impairment, I did not charge the defendant with Driving Under the Influence. The defendant was transported by Pasco County Fire Rescue to Advent Health Wesley Chapel. Trooper Wakeland accompanied the driver in the ambulance. The defendant was then transported by me in FHP3073 to Sumter County Detention Facility without incident and turned over to Sumter County Detention Facility. All events were recorded on FHP3073. The defendant was charged with Fleeing to elude with lights and sirens activated (316.1935.2) and reckless driving (316.192.1a). The other charges, such as Aggravated Assault with intent to commit a felony (784.021. 1b) and Resisting an Officer without Violence (843.02), will be forthcoming and directly filed in Pasco County.
