(25 Oct 2006) HEADLINE: Paintings: A Rare Look Into an Alzheimer's Mind CAPTION: About five million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer's, a progressive condition that causes memory loss. Now, doctors and researchers are studying one man's world of art to help shed light on the disease.(Oct. 25) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] These are works of art created by William Utermohlen (OO'-tur-mah-lehn), an American artist whose work is giving doctors a rare glimpse into the degenerative power of Alzheimer's disease...100 years after it was first reported. SOT: "Alzheimer's disease of course is becoming more and more prominent and we're struggling to understand exactly what it is and how to alter the course." Now, the 73-year-old artist is helping doctors gain a new level of understanding about this memory-destroying condition from which five (m) million Americans suffer. After he was diagnosed with it in 1995, Utermohlen continued to work....producing self-portraits throughout the various stages of his battle with the disease. Tuesday, much of his work was available for viewing at the New York Academy of Medicine. Doctors say they can learn a lot just by looking at the paintings and sketches. SOT: Now what these artworks demonstrate is a bit of the course, it tells us what happens in the later stages of Alzheimer's disease and we see a talented vibrant artist go from, what may be the peak of his career on down to producing rather degenerative figures that probably represent not only his own loss, but his own self experience with what it's like to degenerate with this illness." Utermohlen's chronological artwork reveals his slide into dementia. Viewers can see his careful, artistic details disappearing until all that remained in the year 2000 were distorted depictions of himself. Utermohlen's wife Patricia, says it was difficult for her husband to continue working. SOT: "It takes courage really to look at yourself steadily declining and remember that when you painting yourself, or when you're looking in the mirror, or when you're painting yourself, or when you're talking about yourself to yourself, the spatial quality, the face slips, and you know it slips, but you can't somehow rather eradicate that slip, I think this is what was happening all the time," she said. Eventually, Utermohlen did have to stop painting. The artist now lives in a nursing home. The Associated Press.
