I think the greatest improvement for tyre deformation was definitely the star cutting of the foams and the additional weight certainly helped give a bigger footprint, more grip on a smooth / loose surface and keep the front down on steeper sections The WD40 soak did have a couple of definite effects: 1) Hell of a good way to remove the release agent or general gunk from the tyres. 2)It did actually soften the very top surface of the tyre. I could mark the carcass rubber with a fingernail after treatment easily, however the compound of the tyre does not soften as a whole. Short version. Weights = good for soft surfaces, footprint and stopping back flips. Cut foams = good, linked with weights was better. WD40 = will prob treat all tyres once to remove release agent, maybe to clean every now and then. (short term effects of WD40 appear very good while it is still volatile i.e. treat and go).
