Even More P42s (and one BNSF ES44C4) On Amtrak San Joaquins - June/July 2025

Equipment shortages and failures continue, cancelations and delays do as well, another F59 is out with wreck damage, the summertime Charger ban is out the window, and P42s see near daily use once again. Both 155 and 163 returned for a couple round trips in June, and an additional four (including one wearing Phase VII) ran the line in July to bring this year's total up to seven. It seems the state has given in and is once again leasing two P42s at a time as protect units out of Oakland for use on the San Joaquins and Capitol Corridor routes, and both have been utilized simultaneously on more than one occasion within the last month. It is certain that more will show up in the near future as locomotive overhauls are yet to be announced and funded, and additional cab cars still await their entry into service due to host railroad issues.
