Animals have had a great weight within the beliefs and traditions among the different cultures of the world. Possibly because the animal archetypes represent some of the most transcendent concepts of the deep layers of the unconscious and human instincts such as cosmic, material and spiritual principles; and the sacredness of nature. Religion in Greece was fully integrated into society, so no area was exempt from its belief system and worship of the gods. Religion was public and communal, since sacred concerns served to maintain order and give a sense of reality to the daily affairs of life, there was no division between the sacred and the profane. A number of rites related to the slaughter of dogs have been documented and described. The reasons and circumstances that surrounded such practices can be grouped into three spheres: in purification rituals, in cults to the goddesses Hecate and Artemis, and within curative practices. The opportunities for sacrifice were numerous: religious ceremonies; military engagement; successful termination of pregnancy and childbirth; or healing practices within both public and private life, whether in cathartic, purifying, medical, divine, or atoning circumstances. Therefore, under these scenarios, the dog could be drowned, burned alive, poisoned, or sliced as a simple victim destined to be an 'underdog'. The triple and ambiguous nature of dogs allows us to have opposite but complementary approaches towards them. They appear as impure animals but with therapeutic qualities. An angry beast guides through the gates of death, while a black dog participates in the process of giving birth. Due to reckless behavior, they were not fit to enter the sacred precincts, although they were sacrificed to be offered to some deities. The canine essence was necessary both for domestic life and the afterlife as for everything else.
