NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #44: FLIXBOROUGH Flixborough is a small pleasant village approximately 3 miles from Scunthorpe. The village may be tiny, but it commands a large civil parish located on the Eastern bank of the River Trent. Flixborough has had many different spellings through the centuries, ranging from "Flichesburg" in the Domesday Book to ”Flikesburg”, “Flyxburgh” and “Flixburrow” Its believed the first part of the name is an early form of the word “cliff”, as the original settlement stood on a sloping cliff overlooking the River Trent As such the village's name can be translated as "fortified dwelling on the cliff slope". Excavations by the Humberside Archaeology Unit took place here between 1989 and 1991 which revealed a Middle to Late Saxon settlement and nunnery, dating from the 7th to the 11th centuries It’s noted for a few things, including the UK’s worst industrial disaster. We’ll be covering that in this episode. A notable son of Flixborough is Sir Edmund Anderson, who, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, tried Mary, Queen of Scots. The modern settlement is little more than one road running from East to West, with a few side streets, but Flixborough’s population is quite large – and there’s a very good reason why.
