The University of Hawaiʻi football team continued spring practice Friday morning at the Ching Complex, inching closer to the conclusion of camp as the Rainbow Warriors prepare to transition into their offseason conditioning program next week. Spring drills will wrap up next Friday, marking the end of on-field workouts before the team shifts its focus to strength and conditioning. Among the players drawing attention this spring is Kahuku graduate and redshirt freshman Kainoa "KaiKai" Carvalho. A year ago, Carvalho was in Japan completing a two-year church mission. Now back home, the 2021 Cover2 Mariota Award winner as Hawaiʻi’s state player of the year is competing at slotback and contributing on multiple special teams units, including as a return specialist. Carvalho said his time abroad helped shape his development in ways that extend beyond football. “The main thing is communication,” Carvalho said. “Every play we have to communicate, get the play in and talk to our receivers. When I was out there in Japan, I was communicating with a lot of people every day. I think the biggest thing that has helped me so far in the spring is just communication and being more vocal.” The transition back to Hawaiʻi football has been both exciting and meaningful for the North Shore native. “I’m just trying to soak it all in right now,” Carvalho said. “It’s still kind of transitioning from being back from Japan. Being with family here has helped a lot. Representing the home state, that’s a dream come true. Growing up playing in Hawaiʻi, now playing for the pride of the North Shore — you can feel that brotherhood here. It’s a lot like a family culture. Having the state behind my back and knowing everyone cares about me, I’m loving it here.” Hawaii News, Hawaii Weather, Hawaii Sports See more of the team that is Working for Hawaii on our website: https://www.khon2.com Stay informed about Hawaii news, weather, sports and entertainment, subscribe to the KHON2 YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/KHONNews...
