I've played in bands and jammed with many musicians, encompassing all forms of music over the years; but, just about every gig, every jam session, invariably ends up shaping itself into a bluesy chillout in some form or another. It's the emotional tone of the music, melancholic, soulful, and reflective of hardship but often carrying humor, defiance, and joy. You could ponder the elements and influences - the "call and response" pattern from African music, the 12-bar chord progression, Jump blues and early R'n'B, the raw vocals, slide guitar etc... but, for me, it's the feel that attracts. The mystique of Robert Johnson, the love loss and betrayal of Mamie Smith and Ma Rainey, the electric blues of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf laying the groundwork for Rock'nRoll. The evolution of UK blues turned into The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and the Blues Explosion: all adopting blues riffs and structures, reintroducing them to American audiences in the '60s. The likes of Buddy Guy influenced Clapton, Hendrix, Page, and Beck. On into Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Bonnie Raitt etc. I was curious whether generated blues could have the feel and emotion of the blues even with heartfelt written lyrics at it's core.
