Watch Out for Glycerol in These Products!

You may remember in the news a few months ago it was being recommend that children under eight should avoid having slushies containing the ingredient glycerol. A study published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood showed that 21 young children became acutely unwell soon after drinking a slushie, as a result of what they now call glycerol intoxication syndrome. The researchers said: “There is poor transparency around slush ice drink glycerol concentration; estimating a safe dose is therefore not easy” To emphasise, because slushies can be drank very quickly, the speed of ingestion of the glycerol is clearly very relevant. But my point here is we don’t have a recommended safe dose AND it is very possible that kids at home could take the mr freeze’s out of the freezer before they’re properly frozen and ingest them quickly! Now that we know this is an ingredient that is not safe for young children at high concentrations and when ingested quickly - surely there needs to be regulation around manufacturers using this ingredient in products marketed towards kids?? Yes we don’t know what the quantity of glycerol is in these products but I still believe this is an ingredient that should be removed from all kids products, or at the very least a warning label put on to make parents aware and let them make an informed decision. 100% we need more awareness around this ingredient following this study and if big food companies don’t do it, it’s another case of profit over people.
