Drs. Payner and Cohen-Gadol, neurosurgeons at Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine, have performed hundreds of aneurysm surgeries. An aneurysm occurs when a wall of an artery becomes weak and bulges out to form a bubble. A ruptured brain aneurysm can be a life threatening emergency. The primary symptom of a ruptured aneurysm is having the worst headache of your life. One patient, Deb Edgecombe of Indiana, elected to have her unruptured aneurysm repaired using a method called clipping, where a metal clip is placed over the base of the aneurysm. Dr. Payner describes new technology in this report from a company called Zeiss that is using flourescence dye to visualize if the clipping surgery is successful--by showing where blood may be unintentionally cut off to surrounding blood vessels and to confirm that no blood is entering the aneurysm bubble; in other words, that the clip is correctly placed and is preventing blood flow to the aneurysm.
